Piano Moving – Tips and Advice

Practical advice for moving a piano or upright piano: the site, the lift, preparation, tuning and getting a quote.

Piano moving: what to know before the move

A piano or an upright piano is not an ordinary item to move: it is heavy, valuable and delicate. The tips below help your move go smoothly.

1. Survey the site

At both the pick-up and the delivery address, measure the width of the entrance door, the hallway and the staircase, and note the turns of the stairs. Send photos so we can discuss in advance what to expect.

2. Give the exact number of floors and the lift size

The price of moving depends on the number of floors. If there is a lift, tell us the inner dimensions of the cabin.

3. Clear the instrument

Take everything off the top of the piano. Nothing, such as a vase or books, should be left on it before moving.

4. Decide where the instrument will go

The ideal place for the instrument in its new location is away from outside walls, radiators, windows and direct sunlight, because changes in temperature and humidity are hard on the instrument.

5. Have it tuned after the move, but not immediately

Experts generally recommend waiting a few weeks after the move so the instrument can adapt to its new place and the tuning lasts. Tuning must be done by a separate piano tuner; we do not do it.

6. Ask for a quote in advance

For an exact quote we need the instrument type, the two addresses, the number of floors, the lift and the preferred date. You will find the base prices on the prices page.

Why leave it to professionals?

  • Protection and proper securing of the instrument during transport.
  • Protecting your own safety: moving an upright piano (about 150–300 kg) or a grand piano is dangerous without the equipment and experience.
  • Insured transport: our general liability insurance covers damage that may occur during transport.
